Shop for School Tax-Free before School Begins; Virginia Sales Tax Holiday is August 1–3
July 21, 2014

School supplies selling for $20 or less per item and articles of clothing, including footwear, selling for $100 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax during the Virginia Sales Tax Holiday scheduled for Friday, August 1 through Sunday, August 3.

Families with children in Prince William County Public Schools are encouraged to take advantage of these savings to prepare their students for the upcoming school year. Check your school’s Web site or call your school for a copy of the 2014–15 supply list. For a directory of schools, go to pwcs.edu and click on “Schools,” then select the directory by grade level.

Beginning July 28, SPARK, the Education Foundation for PWCS, will collect school supplies at the Kelly Leadership Center to help ensure that all student have the back-to-school basics they need to return to school ready to learn. The Kelly Leadership Center is located at 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas, VA 20112
Most-needed items include backpacks, 3-ring binders, tabbed dividers, folders with pockets, spiral notebooks, loose-leaf paper, colored pencils, pencil boxes/bags, tissues, hand sanitizer, marble composition books, ink pens (blue or black), No. 2 pencils, washable markers, crayons, highlighters, glue/glue sticks, rounded scissors, index cards, and graph paper.

Bull Run Middle School Student is a 2014 Peace Essay Contest Winner

We are very proud of Alison Zieleman, a rising 8th grade student at Bull Run Middle School for being selected as a Honorable Mention Winner of the 2014 Richmond Peace Education Essay Contest.  Alison's essay was titled Dr. Hawa Abdi:  Somali Hero and can be read on the Richmond Peace Education Center website at http://www.rpec.org/2014-peace-essay-contest-middle-school-winners/ along with the other winning essays.  Congratulations to Alison for having one of the best essays in the state of Virginia.

Rising 6th Grade Immunization
Attention: New for the 2014-2015 School Year

Effective July 1, 2014, the state of Virginia will be requiring all 6th graders (regardless of age) to have a Tdap booster by the first day of school. Previously students were exempt until their 11th birthday. Please visit the Virginia Department of Health to learn more.

Band Instrument Try-Out's for Rising 6th Graders
Strike up the band!  This summer all rising 6th graders who have signed up for band or who are interested in band are invited to come and try out instruments before making a final instrument choice.  We will have 3 more try-out option dates:

August 19 - 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
August 20 - 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
August 21 - 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Please plan to come out to try out the instruments, get your questions answered, and meet with Mr. Malechek, the band director.  Please note that students who do not come to an instrument try-out event will be placed in an available class slot in September and may have more limited instrument choices.  Please feel free to email Mark Malechek at

Summer Reading: Reading is a Wild Ride!
Start your summer off with a wild reading ride! It's time to finally catch up on that book you've been too busy to read. Bull Run Middle School highly encourages all students to participate in the summer reading program. Students may read books from the summer reading lists or ANY other appropriate titles.

Summer Reading Lists

Students who participate and turn in their documentation forms will be eligible to participate in a fall carnival.  In addition, they will earn one extra-credit "A" in their language arts classes for reading one book or two extra-credit "A's" for reading two books. Students can choose one of the following options to document their summer reading: 
Option 1: Submit your summer reading documentation form electronically. Your language arts teacher will have your information before you arrive on the first day of school. You can submit this form within the first two weeks of school too. 
Option 2: Print the PWCS summer reading documentation form, fill it out, and hand it to your language arts teacher within the first two weeks of school.
Option 3: Print your reading log from the public library's Wild Reads program. Hand it to your language arts teacher within the first two weeks of school.

FREE Summer Math Program
TenMarks, an Amazon company, is partnering with states and school divisions to offer its 3-month summer program to families at no cost. The TenMarks Summer Math Program guides students through a personalized curriculum that meets their specific needs, beginning with a diagnostic assessment and using built-in instruction and real-time interventions. The program provides reports and drill-down insights, so families can monitor performance for each student. Designed for students in Grade 1 – Algebra II, this program reviews concepts from the past school year and introduces concepts from the year ahead. For more information, click on the flyers below, or visit http://summermath.tenmarks.com.

BRMS Summer Sports Camps
Registration for our Summer Sports Camps is now open!  The following camps will be offered: 
Basketball Camp, July 28-31, 2014 - 3-5 Grade ($100)

Concussion Seminars for 2014-15
All 6th graders and all new students to the county must complete a concussion seminar in person in order to try-out for a sport. The following are the dates for the seminars for the 2014-15 school year:

August 27th - 6:00 and 6:45
September 3rd - 6:00
November 5th - 6:00
January 20th - 6:00
March 17th - 6:00

The online seminar is available to those students and parents who have completed the in-person seminar the previous year. You must print the certificate and turn it in to Mr. Bianco, Athletic Coordinator for Bull Run.

BRMS to Host a MS Afterschool Program
Bull Run MS has been selected as a pilot school for the School Age Child Care (SACC) middle school program. Below you will find two letters being distributed to students at the elementary schools that feed into BRMS.  Many parents would like a safe, fun learning environment for their students after the school day ends. Summer Assignment for Battlefield HS PreAP English 9

School of Excellence Award
Bull Run Middle School has been recognized as a School of Excellence for the 2013-2014 school year. Congratulations to all of our students, staff, parents and community members for receiving such a prestigious award. This is the second consecutive year that we have earned the award and sixth time overall. 
The School of Excellence award is based on the overall performance of a Prince William County School as determined by specific measures identified by the Strategic Plan in the area of student achievement, school climate and student health(wellness). The measurement results are based on 2012-2013 SOL student achievement results in grades 6-8, results of staff and student climate surveys and the percent of students passing the identified physical education requirements. To achieve the recognition and honor of a School of Excellence, a school must meet at least 90 out of 100 points on the Prince William County School’s Strategic Plan measurements.

Attendance Line
Bull Run Middle School has an automated Attendance Phone Line that you can use to call in any student absences. Simply dial 703-753-7125, and leave a message including the first and last name of the student (with spelling), the student's grade level, your relationship to the student, and reason for missing school. If your student is out sick, please indicate the doctor’s diagnosis or the symptoms your student is having. Thank you! 

Parent Portal
Bull Run Middle School staff members are available to collect parent portal forms in the front office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Parents need to show a photo id and give the signed form (e-mailed to them within 3 days of initial registration) to a front office staff member to have their account activated within 2-3 school days.  More information on this process can be found by clicking on the "Parent Portal" tab on the left side of the front page of this website.
